Getting Prepared for Baby's Arrival

Signs and Treatment of Gestational Diabetes

No more sugars, no more sweets, till you and baby finally meet. Just a little nursery "type" rhyme to lighten the mood, but Gestational Diabetes is no laughing matter. This refers to a condition where mom's blood sugar levels are too high. This is a sign that her body isn't producing enough insulin to breakdown sugars properly. Below you'll find out signs to look for and possible treatment options. Luckily, most mom's go back to normal after Baby is born.

  1. Sign: Excessive Weight Gain - You're going to gain weight during pregnancy…that's a given, but if you notice any fast, extreme weight gain then consult your doctor.
  2. Sign: Excessive Hunger - Let's face it; hunger is a part of pregnancy. Remember, you're now eating for two. If you find that you're overly hungry for long periods of time then you might want to talk with your doc.
  3. Sign: Excessive Thirst - It's important to stay hydrated during pregnancy, but if you find that your typical 8 glasses of water a day aren't doing the job then consult your physician.
  4. Sign: Excessive Urination - If you're spending more time in the bathroom then out, there could be a problem.
  5. Sign: Recurrent Vaginal Infections - If your vaginal area has been itchy or just not quite feeling right you might want to check with your doctor.
  6. Treatment by Diet - Avoid sugar and foods high in sugar. Eat complex carbs such as: rice, pasta, grains, cereals, crackers, bread, potatoes, dried beans and peas. Eat fiber rich foods. Avoid saturated fats. Eat a snack before bed that's carb and protein based.
  7. Treatment with Exercise - Do light exercises 3 - 4 times per week.
  8. Treatment with Weight Maintenance - Maintain a healthy weight throughout the entire pregnancy.
  9. Treatment Assistance by Monitoring Glucose Levels - Either monitor your Glucose levels with a home machine or at doctor's visits depending on the severity of your Diabetes.
  10. Treatment with Insulin - Possible daily insulin injections might be needed if your Diabetes is not manageable through diet and exercise.
