These Medicines and Pregnancy Don't Mix

As a mom-to-be it's up to you to protect your baby from harmful chemicals while he or she is growing in your belly. Staying away from certain medications can help keep your baby safe from potential health problems. Here's our top 8 list of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs to avoid during your pregnancy.

  1. OTC Aspirin - There are some studies that have linked miscarriage to pregnant moms that have taken Aspirin. There are other risks as well, when this drug is taken.
  2. OTC Pepto Bismol - The FDA (Federal Drug Administration) has given this medicine a "C" rating, which means it's not recommended for pregnant women so it's best to stay clear of the pink stuff for now.
  3. OTC Advil and Motrin and Ibuprofen - These are all the same product under different brand names. Taking this drug can cause possible birth defects in your baby.
  4. OTC Aleve - It's recommended to void this drug during pregnancy because of possible kidney problems that can occur in the fetus.
  5. Prescription Accutane (anti-acne drug) - Pregnant women should avoid this drug completely. It can cause your baby to get birth defects.
  6. Prescription Lithium (anti-depressant) - This drug should not be taken at all during pregnancy because it poses birth defect risks to your baby.
  7. Prescription Tegison (for psoriasis) -This drug should be avoided before and during pregnancy because of serious risks to the baby. Can cause birth defects.
  8. Prescription Coumadin (anti-coagulant) - Avoid this when pregnant because of risk of birth defects to your unborn child.
