Getting Prepared for Baby's Arrival

Food During Pregnancy - List of No No's

Finally, you get to "Eat for Two!" so I'm sure you're not thrilled to find out that there are some foods that you should avoid during your pregnancy. Hopefully none on our list are your favorites. Ask your doctor about this if you're really craving something on our "Don't Eat" list.

  1. Alcohol - I know this is a beverage, but since you consume it, I put it on the list. Avoid beer, liquor, wine and anything else that gives you a buzz. This isn't good for your baby's development.
  2. High Mercury Seafood - Avoid the following seafood because of high mercury levels: swordfish, king mackerel, shark and tilefish. Also eat the following in moderation: shrimp, canned tuna, salmon, pollock, catfish and cod. Stay away from raw, undercooked and contaminated seafood. Keep away from oysters and clams as well.
  3. Undercooked Meat - Stay away from meat that is undercooked such as: poultry and eggs, uncooked hot dogs and bologna, refrigerated pates and meat spreads. It's also a good idea not to eat foods that are made with raw eggs. This includes food like eggnog and hollandaise sauce.
  4. Unpasteurized Foods - Steer clear of foods that are unpasteurized. Most of these are in the dairy food group such as: brie, feta, camembert, blue cheese and Mexican style cheeses.
  5. Unpasteurized Juice - If the label on a juice container says, unpasteurized, leave it on the shelf till after the baby is born.
  6. Liver - Say "No Thenks" to an extra serving of liver. Liver has high amounts of Vitamin A and consuming too much of this vitamin during pregnancy can cause birth defects in your baby.
  7. Caffeine - Keep your intake of caffeinated beverages and foods to a minimum to avoid raising your blood pressure and heart rate during pregnancy. This substance can also stimulate your baby and keep him or her up all hours of the night resulting in lack of sleep for you as well.
  8. Herbal Tea - Avoid herbal tea unless your healthcare provider says it's ok.
  9. Raw Sprouts - Keep away from Raw Sprouts of any kind including: alfalfa, clover, radish and mung bean.
  10. Aren't you glad ice cream, cookies and cake weren't on this list!
