Getting Prepared for Baby's Arrival
Activities to Avoid During Pregnancy
Once you find out a baby is growing inside you... everything changes! You suddenly become "The Protector of Your Belly!" If you bump into something, you instantly grab your tummy. If your pants are a little tight, you wonder if your baby is being squished. Getting "tummy obsessed" is just part of being pregnant. The good news is that your baby is quite safe and protected in your womb. Most regular activities are fine, but here are just a few that should be avoided.
- Contact Sports - During pregnancy it's recommended that you don't play any type of contact sport that could cause you to get hit in the stomach with a ball or bang into other people.
- Fast Moving Activities - You should also avoid all activities that could cause you to fall such as: ice skating, roller skating, skiing, gymnastics, scootering, horse back riding etc…
- Lying on your Back - You should try not to sleep completely flat on your back after the 4th month. This can cause the weight of the baby and uterus to press on a blood vessel and cause the blood flow to the uterus to decrease.
- Sniffing Fumes - You should stay away from anything that has really strong fumes such as paint, cleaning supplies or any liquids with a strong odor. If you're worried about this you could check with your doctor for a list.
- Lifting Heavy Objects - Make your partner or friends lift those heavy objects so you don't put unwanted strain on your belly. Also, check with your doc before lifting any heavy bar bells.
- Raising Heart Rate - Avoid workouts that get your heart rate too high. Too high being 140+ beats per minute.
- Scuba Diving - Keep your scuba gear, but forget the scuba diving till after the baby is born. Your baby won't enjoy the extra pressure.
- Amusement Rides - Take the flume ride and that huge roller coaster off your list of things to do this year. Fast moving or twisting or turning amusement rides are a no-no during pregnancy.
- Soaking in Hot Water - Jacuzzis and hot tubs aren't the best place for a pregnant woman. Wait till after the baby is born to take a dip in hot water.
- Excessive Sun Bathing - Avoid baking in the sun for really long periods of time. Your temperature can go up and so can Baby's, possibly resulting in birth defects.
