How to Help a Choking Baby
When a baby first learns to eat solid foods, there's almost always some choking involved. Most of the time it's nothing serious and the baby will spit the food out. New parents tend to panic when their baby chokes for even a second. I know I did! Here are some helpful suggestions on how to tell if your baby is seriously choking and what to do if that happens.
- Signs Your Choking Baby Needs Your Help - Your baby can't cry or breathe and his face is turning purple or red.
- Call 911 - Have someone call 911 incase you can't dislodge the item from your baby's throat. It's always a good thing to know backup is coming.
- Place Baby Face Down - Lay your baby face down on your arm. Your baby's chest should be against your hand and your baby's legs should be straddling your arm near your elbow.
- Keep Baby's Neck Straight - Try to keep your baby's neck as straight as possible when putting on your arm.
- Baby's Head Lower Then His Hips - Angle your baby's head lower then his hips.
- Strike Baby's Back - Use the bottom part of your palm and strike your baby's back 5 times. Make sure you hit him between the shoulder blades, not lower.
- Look in Baby's Mouth - If you see something in baby's mouth reach in with your pointer finger bent like a hook and grab the item. If something is close to the throat then don't reach into your baby's mouth, you might cause it to go deeper.
- Back Strikes Again - If you don't get it the first time then try 5 more strikes to the back as you hold your baby on your arm with his head lower then his hips.
- Doctor Visit - Once your baby is safe from harm, take him to the doctor to make sure that he's ok. Sometimes when babies choke, their throats can become irritated. It's best to make sure your baby is fine, for your baby's sake and for your peace of mind.
