Help Your Constipated Baby Feel Better

If your baby starts to act uncomfortable and you notice that he gets pink cheeks when trying to make a bowel movement then this probably means that he's a little constipated. This can happen when babies start eating solid foods or for other various reason. You can help your baby's "movements" move again by doing the following.

  1. Bicycle Motions - Place your baby on his back and move his legs as if he's riding a bike. This will help his digestive track push through any gas or hard feces that might be causing him to get backed up.
  2. More Water - Add extra water to your baby's diet. Warm water can also sometimes help loosen the stool.
  3. Decrease Certain Foods - Foods such as: cereal, bananas and rice can cause a baby to get constipated. Decrease these foods if your little one is having a problem with bowel movements.
  4. Warm Drinks - Warm up your baby's formula or water in a bottle before the feeding. This can help get things moving.
  5. Analyze Your Baby's Diet - Sometimes babies can get constipated when you introduce new foods to their diet. Keep a log of what your baby is eating and if he gets constipated then try eliminating the latest new food on the list.
  6. Add High Fiber Foods to Baby's Diet - Adding higher fiber foods to your little one's diet can definitely make bowel movements flow better. Here are some food suggestions: whole-grain cereals, breads, plums, raisins, peas, broccoli, beans, prunes and apricots.
  7. Warm Bath - Giving your baby a warm bath can sometimes help to ease gas and constipation. Rub your baby's back gently as you bathe him. This will help to move his gas around and hopefully dislodge the hard stool in his system.
  8. Tap Baby's Back - Tap or rub your baby's back. This should help to alleviate gas pains and help move stool along.
  9. See a Doctor - If nothing seems to work then take your baby for a visit to the Pediatrician.
