Ways to Encourage Crawling
No matter what... your baby will learn to crawl. Then he'll pull himself to standing and soon be stumbling across the room. There are some fun ways you can bond with your child while teaching him how to crawl to you or across the room. Here are some suggestions.
- Tummy Time - Place your baby on a baby mat or blanket on his tummy. Watch how he tries hard to raise his head and push himself up. This will help your baby gain the arm strength he'll need to crawl. If your baby starts to get frustrated then flip him to his back and give him lots of love.
- Strategically Placed Objects - Place baby toys or baby-safe objects right out of grasping reach. This will encourage your baby to try and move to get the object. When he grabs the object you can say what it is so he also learns the names of things.
- Knees to Tummy - Bring your baby's knees to his tummy while he's laying tummy down. This will encourage him to push up with his knees, building those crawling muscles.
- Show Baby How to Rock - Pull your baby's knees to his tummy and hold him, tummy down, with his hands touching the floor. Gently rock him back and forth to teach him the rocking motion. Eventually he'll want to try it himself.
- Comfortable Clothes - If you have a girl, make sure you don't put her in a dress when she's learning to crawl. This will keep her from being able to move easily. Keep your baby in comfortable crawling clothes to make it as easy as possible.
