Baby Safety in the Home

As a parent, it's up to you to keep your baby safe. When your tot learns to crawl he or she can get into lots of trouble if your house isn't baby proofed. Here is a list of important baby proofing items you need to keep your wee one out of harm's way on every journey.

  1. Outlet Covers - For some reason babies are fascinated with electrical outlets. It's important to cover every outlet to keep your baby safe from shocks or worse.
  2. Security Gates - Security gates are a parent's best friend! These will help to keep your baby in rooms that are baby-safe and out of non-baby zones. Put gates across doorways, at top of stairs and even on your outside deck.
  3. Baby Monitor - To give you a little freedom and keep your baby safe, it's a good idea to get a baby monitor. You can decide if you want an audio only or audio and video monitor. Place it in your nursery when your baby is napping and you'll be able to do your daily chores while keeping an eye and ear on your baby from a far.
  4. Supervise All Baby/Pet Encounters - Never leave pets alone with your baby.
  5. Lock Cabinets and Drawers - Get baby proof locks for all low cabinets and drawers so you can keep non-baby items out of your wee one's reach.
  6. Get Down to Your Baby's Level - Pick up everything in crawling range to keep your baby from eating or touching items that aren't baby-safe.
  7. Corner Bumpers - Keep your baby safe from sharp corners on end tables or other furniture by getting bumpers for every pointed edge.
  8. Cord Retractors - Keep all dangling cords from shades and plugged in cords from lamps and accessories hidden with cord retractors. This will keep your baby from pulling on the cords and getting hurt.
  9. Do Plant Research - Did you know that 75% of houseplants are poisonous? Babies will eat anything they can put in their mouth so make sure to do research before buying plants for your home to make sure they're baby-safe.
  10. Locks for Toilet - Get locks for your toilet seats. Babies can drown in small amounts of water and they also don't realize that toilet water is not for drinking. This will keep your dog from drinking out of the toilet too!
