How Much Sleep Do Babies Need?

The answer is... a lot! Believe it or not your newborn might sleep up to 20 hours per day. Unfortunately for you, your baby's sleep habits are broken up into a few hours at a time, which means you'll also only get short sleep spurts. Your baby's hunger pangs will wake him and your baby will wake you when it's meal time. As your baby grows he'll require less sleep. Find out how much below.

  1. Newborns Sleep 16 - 20 Hours - Newborns can sleep anywhere from 16 - 20 hours, but not all at once and usually about 4 hours at a time because they wake up for feedings.
  2. Babies 2 - 3 Months Sleep More Hours at One Time - Babies between 2 - 3 months will sleep 16 - 20 hours long, but will sleep for longer periods of time through the night with fewer naps and more day-time feedings.
  3. Around 4 Months Baby Sleeps Through the Night - When babies get to be around 4 months old they can sleep anywhere from 10 - 15 hours per night with one or a few feedings mixed in, but they tend to sleep for longer periods of time. They will usually nap around 3 -5 hours during the day. Also consisting of periodic feedings.
  4. Older Babies Sleep Long Hours at Night with Fewer Daily Naps - From 6 - 12 months babies should be sleeping through the night and this can be from 10 - 12 hours at night and then they'll take a few naps during the day, between 1 - 3 hours worth.
  5. Unpredictable Babies - Babies are all different, so if your little one is sleeping longer then you expected or less, don't worry, they're all on different sleep schedules. If your baby has trouble sleeping then you might want to ask your doctor what he or she recommends.
  6. Tips for Parents - You should nap when Baby is napping to ensure that you get enough rest to be alert when your baby needs you. Sweet Dreams!
