How to Make Breast Feeding Work

Breastfeeding is easy for some moms and not so easy for others. If you're having a little trouble getting your baby to latch on…don't worry, there's hope. Below are some helpful tips on how to make breast feeding your baby work for you and your little cutie pie.

  1. Switch Feeding Positions - If your baby just isn't cooperating then you might want to try some different breast feeding positions.
  2. Switch Breasts - If you usually start with the left breast, you might want to consider starting with the right. You never know, your wee one might have a side preference.
  3. Burps in Between Switches - Make sure to burp your baby before switching nipples.
  4. Mother's Milk Herbal Tea - Believe it or not, you can actually drink tea to help with your milk flow. It's called "Mother's Milk" herbal tea. Give it a try if your baby seems to have to work too hard during feedings.
  5. Get Breast Feeding Accessories - Using a breast feeding pillow and stool can sometimes help make feeding more comfortable for you and for your baby.
  6. Have Daddy Help - If you're having trouble breast feeding, sometimes it's a good idea to take a break. Your baby can sense your stress and will get more stressed during feedings if you are. Why not pump your breast milk and let dad bottle feed now and then.
  7. Breast feed Right Away - Your baby will take to breast feeding better if you breast feed within the first hour after your baby is born.
  8. Keep your Nipples from Getting Sore - If your nipples start to feel a little sore you can use lanolin to help ease the soreness.
  9. Watch What You Eat - If your baby is acting strange during feedings it might be because your breast milk tastes funny. In this case, you'll want to avoid spicy foods, caffeine and chocolate. If you can't give it all up at once, take out one at a time and monitor your baby's reaction during feedings.
  10. Don't Get Too Stressed - Try not to get too stressed if your baby just isn't into breast feeding. Remember, it's ok if you have to switch to the bottle. Be proud that you gave it your best try!
