Tips for Picking a Baby Name
Picking a name for your baby can sometimes be difficult, especially if your spouse is determined to name your son after his favorite uncle, Napoleon. "Yikes!" This doesn't have to be as hard as it seems. There are ways to make the baby name picking process easier. Find out how below.
- Reading Baby Name Books - Look at a book or list of baby names and narrow down some choices that both you and your partner like.
- Check Each Name's Origin and Definition - Look up the origin of each name and check the definition to see if you like it.
- List the Nicknames - Write down all the possible nicknames that could go with your list of favorites. Make sure there aren't any bad nicknames associated with your top choices.
- Role Play - Try introducing yourself with each name to see if you like it for an adult and child both.
- Choose a Relative's Name - You can consider naming your child after a relative or use a relatives name as a middle name. You could even use a name backwards to honor a loved one: Leon - Noel
- Watch Out for Gender Neutral Names - You might want to stay clear of names like Pat or Chris. This is just a pet peeve of mine because sometimes people get confused over the phone with gender neutral names.
- Stay Away from Oddly Spelled Names - Avoid odd spelled names like Kym or Jaymes. Your child won't ever find his or her name on a product and no one will remember how to spell his or her name on a card or in school.
- First with Last Name Check - Check to see if it goes well with your last name. If you name your child Kelly Camelli, people will definitely talk!
- No Outsiders Allowed - Don't let anyone besides you and your partner choose the name. If you tell your family or friends your choice, don't ask for opinions or you'll get ones you won't want to hear.
- Be Happy With Your Choice - Be proud of the name you pick and choose one that you and your partner both love! Consider keeping your name choice to yourself until you introduce everyone to your child for the first time.
