Getting Prepared for Baby's Arrival

Special Section for Mothers Over 35

Now-a-days women are waiting longer to get pregnant. With these later pregnancies there are some concerns. If you're pregnant and 35+ years "young" then you should be aware of the following medical concerns for a later pregnancy. Remember though, just because you're over 35 doesn't mean that these problems will definitely occur. Don't spend time worrying. Spend this exciting time bonding with the special gift inside you.

  1. Higher Risk of Miscarriage - A miscarriage is when a pregnancy ends spontaneously. In your 20s the miscarriage rate is between 5 - 10%, but in pregnant women above 35yrs it is as high as 25%.
  2. Higher Risk of High Blood Pressure - A Normal blood pressure rate is at or below 120 / 80. If you monitor your blood pressure at home and you go above this level more then a few times during your pregnancy then it's time to visit the doctor.
  3. Higher Risk of Gestational Diabetes - This means that the mom's body isn't able to process sugar efficiently. This can be controlled by a strict diet or medication in extreme cases. This usually goes away after pregnancy.
  4. Higher Risk of Placental and Bleeding Problems - If you experience bleeding during your pregnancy and the blood is bright red, contact your doctor immediately.
  5. Harder Deliveries with a Higher Probability for Cesarean Delivery - Cesarean delivery is otherwise known as a C-section where the doctor must surgically remove the baby from the womb.
  6. Higher Chance of Having Twins or Triplets - Heck, it might not be such a bad thing to deliver all your children in one shot!
  7. Higher Risk of Genetic Disorders - The chance of having a child with Down Syndrome or other genetic disorders is heightened when a woman has a baby over the age of 35.
